Happy places (notice how mine mostly involve food):
Makena Beach Resort in Maui. Room service. Hawaiian breakfast of Portuguese sausage (linguiça ) rice and eggs. Counting geckos.
Salema in the Western Algarve, Portugal. Expats drinking wine, naked babies playing on the beach. Boia Bar Ristorante on the sand. Pouring piri-piri sauce over grilled fish.
Cafe du Monde in New Orleans. Best. Tourist. Trap. Ever. Piles of beignets heaped with mountains of powdered sugar. Chicory coffee. Cafe au Lait. Street musicians. Early morning humidity. Dodging pigeons.
Central Oregon - Dechutes River. My favorite place on Earth. Sound of lava rock crunching under my shoes, lodge pole pines, smells like sage. And juniper.
Hiking down to the base of Puente Nuevo in Ronda, Spain. Sacred space. The bridge has been a repeat theme for me over the last decade.
Children's Fairyland in Oakland, California. Late 70's / early 80's. I associate this place entirely with my dad (who ran the Oakland Convention and Tourism bereau during this period). It apparently slipped in to disrepair in the late 80's and early 90s but has since been revived. Nothing better than those yellow keys.
